                                          Synthetic Process

                                          Aminomethanesulfonic acid is synthesized through the following routes:

                                          • Reaction of sodium sulfite with formaldehyde and ammonia: Sodium sulfite is reacted with formaldehyde and ammonia or ammonium chloride to form the amino sulfonic acid salt, which is then acidified to yield the free acid.

                                          • Hydrolysis of aminomethanesulfonyl chloride: Aminomethanesulfonyl chloride is hydrolyzed under controlled conditions to yield the sulfonic acid.

                                          • Purification: The crude product is purified by recrystallization from water or water-alcohol mixtures.
