Red phosphorus (CAS 7723-14-0), also known as amorphous phosphorus, is an allotrope of elemental phosphorus with the molecular formula P (atomic weight 30.97). It appears as a red to reddish-violet or dark brown amorphous powder, odorless, and insoluble in water and carbon disulfide . Density is approximately 2.34 g/mL at 25°C, with a melting point around 280°C (under pressure; it sublimes at approximately 590°C without melting under normal pressure) .

The product is commercially supplied in two primary grades: First Grade (P ≥ 98.5%) and Superior Grade (P ≥ 99.0%), with limits on yellow phosphorus content (≤0.005%), free acid (≤0.30–0.50%), and moisture (≤0.20–0.25%) . It is used in the manufacture of matches, fireworks, flame retardants, phosphoric acid and phosphorus derivatives, pesticides, and organic synthesis .

Critical transport and handling note: Red phosphorus is classified as a Class 4.1 flammable solid, UN 1338, Packing Group III . It is listed in China’s Catalogue of Hazardous Chemicals (2015 edition) and requires commodity inspection for export . Shanghai port export typically requires direct loading alongside the vessel , and not all shipping lines or dangerous goods warehouses accept this class of cargo, particularly in summer . Standard export packaging is 50 kg steel drums with tightly closed inner plastic bags . Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and incompatible materials.
