/AQUATIC SPECIES/ Early life stages of Salmo gairdneri, from the fertilized egg to the early fry stage, were continuously exposed to various dialkyldithiocarbamates (DDCs), ethylenebisdithiocarbamates (BDCs) and a number of degradation products. Both DDCs and BDCs induced embryotoxicity, but DDCs were generally found to be more toxic than BDCs. For some DDCs adverse effects, below ppb-level were observed. All compounds, including carbon disulfide, were shown to have teratogenic properties. The most striking effects were severe spinal and vertebral abnormalities, mostly associated with retarded yolk sac resorption. /Dialkyldithiocarbamates/
Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate's production and use as a disinfectant, corrosion inhibitor, coagulant, vulcanizing agent, chelating agent, and fungicide(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC). Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is used in water treatment, the rubber industry and is a registered biocide for cutting oils and aqueous systems in industries such as leather tanning and paper manufacturing(2). It is also used as an antimicrobial agent in paints(3).
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 2.2(SRC), determined from a water solubility of 1X10+6 mg/L (miscible)(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Hydrolysis half-life of 18 minutes, 25.9, and 433.3 hours were reported for sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate at pH 5, 7, and 9, respectively(2); this compound would be expected to hydrolyze in moist neutral or acidic soils(SRC). The estimated pKa of sodium N,N-dimethydithiocarbamate is 5.4(6), indicating that this compound will primarily exist in the dissociated form at environmentally relevant pHs; therefore, volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC). Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces since it is a salt and will be nonvolatile(SRC). Photolysis in aqueous solution and on soil was found to be an important degradation process for a related compound, ziram(4), and may also be important for sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate(SRC). Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate, present at 100 mg/L, reached 2% of its theoretical BOD in 28 days at 25 °C using an activated sludge inoculum at 30 mg/L and the Japanese MITI test(5); however, this result may be due to the biocidal properties of sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate(SRC). EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. Sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate Use and Manufacturing
The preparation method is to add water into the reaction kettle, add lye and 40% dimethylamine solution under stirring, and add carbon disulfide dropwise after cooling to about 10°C, and control the temperature of the dropping reaction to not exceed 30°C. After the dropwise addition of carbon disulfide is completed, Continue the reaction for 1 to 2 hours, and then stand still to separate the insoluble residue to obtain a thiram solution. To obtain solid thiram sodium, concentration under reduced pressure is required for crystallization.
