Organosulfides, such as TETRAHYDROTHIOPHENE, are incompatible with acids, diazo and azo compounds, halocarbons, isocyanates, aldehydes, alkali metals, nitrides, hydrides, and other strong reducing agents. Reactions with these materials generate heat and in many cases hydrogen gas. Many of these compounds may liberate hydrogen sulfide upon decomposition or reaction with an acid. Slow addition of hydrogen peroxide to the thiophene resulted in explosions on three occasions, Chem. Eng. News, 1974, 52(39), 3.

SMALL FIRE: Dry chemical, CO2, water spray or regular foam. LARGE FIRE: Water spray, fog or regular foam. Do not use straight streams. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. Vapor-phase reaction of tetrahydrofuran and hydrogen sulfide over a heteropolyacid-promoted metal oxide catalyst followed by separation and distillation of tetrahydrothiophene.|Thiophene is reduced to tetrahydrothiophene by sodium in alcohol or ammonia, or with palladium, cobalt, molybdenum or rhenium catalysts under carefully controlled conditions.
Used as odorant for fuel gas such as city gas, petroleum liquefied gas, natural liquefied gas, etc., as well as raw materials for medicine and pesticides.
