Chloromethylation of p-hydroxyacetophenone with formaldehyde and concentrated hydrochloric acid to produce 3-chloromethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone, which is then esterified with acetic anhydride to give 3-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone Diacetate, the latter is obtained by bromination with bromine.
