violet or dark purple, deliquescent crystal(s); made by reacting KMnO4 and CaCl2; used in the textile industry, to sterilize water, and as a deodorizer [HAW93] [MER06]Purple crystalline solid. Strong Oxidizing Agent

CALCIUM PERMANGANATE is an oxidizing agent. Noncombustible but it will accelerate the burning of combustible material. If the combustible material is finely divided the mixture may be explosive. Contact with liquid combustible materials may result in spontaneous ignition. Contact with sulfuric acid may cause fires or explosions. Mixtures with acetic acid or acetic anhydride can explode if not kept cold [Von Schwartz 1918 p. 34 ]. Explosions can occur when calcium permanganate that has been treated with sulfuric acid comes in contact with benzene, carbon disulfide, diethyl ether, ethyl alcohol, petroleum, or other organic matter.

FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. SMALL LIQUID SPILL: Use a non-combustible material like vermiculite or sand to soak up the product and place into a container for later disposal. Excerpt from ERG Guide 140 [Oxidizers]: Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves. Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Contaminated clothing may be a fire risk when dry. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep victim calm and warm.
