MONOISOPROPANOLAMINE is an aminoalcohol. Amines are chemical bases. They neutralize acids to form salts plus water. These acid-base reactions are exothermic. The amount of heat that is evolved per mole of amine in a neutralization is largely independent of the strength of the amine as a base. Amines may be incompatible with isocyanates, halogenated organics, peroxides, phenols (acidic), epoxides, anhydrides, and acid halides. Flammable gaseous hydrogen is generated by amines in combination with strong reducing agents, such as hydrides.

Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

The substance is corrosive to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation may cause lung oedema, but only after initial corrosive effects on eyes and/or airways have become manifest. Medical observation is indicated. If swallowed the substance may cause vomiting and could result in aspiration pneumonitis.

Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

The major hazards encountered in the use and handling of 1-amino-2-propanol stem from its toxicologic properties. Toxic primarily by inhalation and dermal contact, exposure to this liquid, with a slight ammonia odor, may occur from its production and use as a chemical intermediate, emulsifying agent, in drycleaning soaps, wax removers, metal cutting oils, cosmetics, plasticizers,and insecticides. In activities and situations where over-exposure may occur, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. If contact should occur, irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes, and wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. 1-Amino-2-propanol must be moderately heated before ignition will occur. Fires involving this substance may be extinguished with water spray or alcohol foam.

Since 1-amino-2-propanol is primarily used as a chemical intermediate in the production of derivatives for many industries(1), it may be released to the environment in waste streams generated at sites of its commercial production and use(SRC).

TERRESTRIAL FATE: The dominant degradation process for 1-amino-2-propanol in soil is expected to be biodegradation. Several biodegradation studies have demonstrated that 1-amino-2-propanol is biodegradable(1,2,3). Based upon an estimated Koc of 7.1, 1-amino-2-propanol is expected to leach readily in soil(4,SRC). The importance of leaching may be lessened by concurrent biodegradation. Based upon a vapor pressure of 0.47 mm Hg at 25 °C(5), 1-amino-2-propanol should evaporate slowly from dry surfaces(SRC).|AQUATIC FATE: The dominant removal process for 1-amino-2-propanol in water is expected to be biodegradation. Several biodegradation studies have demonstrated that 1-amino-2-propanol is readily biodegradable(1,2,3). Aquatic volatilization, bioconcentration, and adsorption to sediment are not expected to be important(SRC).|ATMOSPHERIC FATE: Based upon a vapor pressure of 0.47 mm Hg at 25 °C(1), 1-amino-2-propanol is expected to exist almost entirely in the vapor-phase in the ambient atmosphere(2,SRC). It is expected to degrade relatively rapidly in an average ambient atmosphere (estimated half-life of about 9.9 hr) by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals (3,SRC). Since 1-amino-2-propanol is miscible in water(4), physical removal via wet deposition is likely to occur(SRC).

The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of 1-amino-2-propanol with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated to be 39.1X10-12 cu cm/molecule-sec at room temperature which corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 9.9 hr at an atmospheric concn of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1,SRC).

Based upon an experimental log Kow of - 0.96(1), the BCF for 1-amino-2-propanol can be estimated to be 0.11 from a regression-derived equation(2,SRC). This BCF value suggests that 1-amino-2-propanol will not bioconcentrate significantly in aquatic organisms(SRC).

Based upon an experimental log Kow of -0.96(1), the Koc for 1-amino-2-propanol can be estimated to be 7.1 from a regression-derived equation(2,SRC). This BCF value suggests that 1-amino-2-propanol has very high soil mobility(3).

The Henry's Law constant for 1-amino-2-propanol can be estimated to be 2.34X10-10 atm-cu m/mole using a structure estimation method(1,SRC); this value of Henry's Law constant indicates that a compound is essentially non-volatile from water(2). Based upon a vapor pressure of 0.47 mm Hg at 25 °C(3), 1-amino-2-propanol should evaporate from dry surfaces(SRC).

Occupational exposure to 1-amino-2-propa dermal contact and inhalation of vapo relatively low vapor A10: 19 (1987) Occu dermal contact and inhalation of vapo relatively low vapor|NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 99,320 workers are potentially exposed to 1-amino-2-propanol in the USA(1).

Drug Information

Vapor irritates eyes and nose. Liquid causes local injury to mouth, throat, digestive tract, skin, and eyes. (USCG, 1999)

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

Methods of Manufacturing

Can be prepared by the reaction of propylene oxide and ammonia. After mixing propylene oxide with ammonia, preheating for addition reaction, the resulting mixture is subjected to deamination, dehydration, vacuum distillation, and rectification to obtain finished products. If the feeding ratio of propylene oxide and ammonia is adjusted during the reaction process, different ratios of isopropanolamine, diisopropanolamine and triisopropanolamine can be prepared.

This product can be used as surfactant, refining agent for fiber industry, antistatic agent, dyeing agent, fiber wetting agent, and can also be used as synthetic detergent, cosmetic lubricant, cutting oil antioxidant, plasticizer, emulsifier and solvent Of preparation.

Of 75 organic compounds listed in Appendix D to 40 CFR 122, 24 compounds have not been previously shown amenable to existing EPA Methods for analysis in water and wastewater. The present work reports on 17 of those 24 compounds using 600 Methods with appropriate modification. The approach was to demonstrate performance in the areas: (1) chromatography - using fused silica capillary columns, (2) extraction and concentration, and (3) cleanup. When attempts were successful, the integrated method was tested for accuracy and precision. A purge-and-trap approach was shown to have substantial problems with the volatile amines. An automated heated headspace/capillary column method worked poorly for monoalkyl amines. A specially prepared column packing was effective for all of the volatile amines. No method development was achieved for either ethanolamine or isopropanolamine.
