Lanolin may gradually undergo autoxidation during storage. To inhibit this process, the inclusion of butylated hydroxytoluene is permitted as an antioxidant. Exposure to excessive or prolonged heating may cause anhydrous lanolin to darken in color and develop a strong rancidlike odor. However, lanolin may be sterilized by dry heat at 150°C. Ophthalmic ointments containing lanolin may be sterilized by filtration or by exposure to gamma irradiation.

Lanolin Use and Manufacturing
Preparation of crude lanolin using wool scouring sewage as raw material Add aluminum trichloride to wool scouring wastewater to obtain lanolin-containing sludge, which absorbs water to obtain sludge. Take 600kg of sludge, add 480kg of benzene, stir while adding, heat at 56℃ for 1h, stop stirring, precipitate for 1h, after clarification, the benzene solution will dissolve lanolin by 6%-40%, move it into the distillation tower, heat and distill until it contains lanolin. 34%, it is released when the temperature is lower than 40℃ to obtain crude lanolin. Scouring sewage [AlCl3]→sludge [benzene, 30℃]→Preparation of crude lanolin and phenyl grease Take 2100kg of crude lanolin and put it into the reaction pot, heat to 50℃, and then heat about 50% (g/g) The sulfuric acid solution was added to the crude lanolin, stirred for 45min, precipitated for half an hour, released the leg, added light ethanol to the phenyl fat layer, heated and kept at 60℃, stirred for half an hour, precipitated for half an hour, and released the leg to obtain acid-treated phenyl resin. Take acid-treated phenyl resin and add 180kg of ethanol, gradually add about 70kg of 300g/L sodium hydroxide solution, adjust pH9, add 180kg of water, keep the temperature at 60℃, and keep stirring from the time of ethanol addition to the completion of water addition, then continue to stir for 10 minutes, and let stand still , Precipitate for 1h, release the phenol, add light ethanol to the phenyl ester layer, stir, precipitate for 1h, release the lip to neutralize the phenyl ester. Crude lanolin [sulfuric acid, water]→[light ethanol] acid-treated phenyl ester [60℃, ethanol]→[NaOH, H2O] neutralized phenyl ester. Preparation of medicinal lanolin. Take neutralized phenyl ester and add 3.8% over 24kg of hydrogen oxide, stirring, keeping the temperature at 60°C, precipitating for 35 minutes, letting off the feet, maintaining pH 8-9, adding light ethanol, precipitating for 2 hours, letting off the feet, and obtaining refined phenyl resin. Distill, the liquid temperature is 110°C and vacuum evaporation until it can't be steamed, cool to 60°C, add ethanol, stir and precipitate for 1h, separate the lower layer of lanolin, add ethanol, heat and stir for 10min, discard the ethanol, and evaporate the ethanol under reduced pressure. Spun silk cloth is filtered to obtain medicinal lanolin. Neutralized phenyl fat [H2O2, ethanol, 60°C] → refined phenyl fat [ethanol, 110°C] → finished lanolin.

Gas chromatographic fixative (maximum use temperature 200℃, solvent is chloroform), separation and analysis of non-polar compounds, ethanol, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds and volatile oil.
