Sodium citrate is the trisodium salt of citric acid. It has a role as a flavouring agent and an anticoagulant. It contains a citrate(3-).|Sodium citrate is the sodium salt of citric acid. It is white, crystalline powder or white, granular crystals, slightly deliquescent in moist air, freely soluble in water, practically insoluble in alcohol. Like citric acid, it has a sour taste. From the medical point of view, it is used as alkalinizing agent. It works by neutralizing excess acid in the blood and urine. It has been indicated for the treatment of metabolic acidosis.|Sodium salts of citric acid that are used as buffers and food preservatives. They are used medically as anticoagulants in stored blood, and for urine alkalization in the prevention of KIDNEY STONES.

Manufacturers, packers, and distributors of drug and drug products for human use are responsible for complying with the labeling, certification, and usage requirements as prescribed by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as amended (secs 201-902, 52 Stat. 1040 et seq., as amended; 21 U.S.C. 321-392).|Trisodium citrate is a prior sanctioned food ingredient classified as a stabilizer when migrating from food-packaging material.
Combustible.
Not Classified
Use water spray, powder.
Sweep spilled substance into covered containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Wash away remainder with plenty of water.
Evaporation at 20 °C is negligible; a nuisance-causing concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.
The substance is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract.
NO open flames.
Use ventilation (not if powder).
Wear safety spectacles.
Toxicity
Overdose toxicity is mainly due to alkalosis as well as tetany or depressed heart function due to lack of free calcium.
Drug Information
Used as an anticoagulant during plasmophoresis as well as a neutralizing agent in the treatment of upset stomach and acidic urine.|FDA Label

WHEN GIVEN IN EXCESS AMT SODIUM CITRATE MAY PRODUCE ALKALOSIS & MAY CAUSE TETANY OR DEPRESS THE HEART BY DECREASING THE IONIZED CALCIUM LEVEL OF THE BLOOD.
Citrate prevents activation of the clotting cascade by chelating calcium ions. Citrate neutralizes acid in the stomach and urine, raising the pH.

Citrate chelates free calcium ions preventing them from forming a complex with tissue factor and coagulation factor VIIa to promote the activation of coagulation factor X. This inhibits the extrinsic initiation of the coagulation cascade. Citrate may also exert an anticoagulant effect via a so far unknown mechanism as restoration of calcium concentration does not fully reverse the effect of citrate. Citrate is a weak base and so reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to raise the pH. It it further metabolized to bicarbonate which then acts as a systemic alkalizing agent, raising the pH of the blood and urine. It also acts as a diuretic and increases the urinary excretion of calcium.
Fresh air, rest.
Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.

The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

Trisodium citrate Use and Manufacturing
USUALLY BY ADDING SODIUM CARBONATE TO A SOLN OF CITRIC ACID UNTIL EFFERVESCENCE CEASES, EVAPORATING, AND GRANULATING THE PRODUCT.|Sodium sulfate soln is treated with calcium citrate, filtered, concentrated and crystallized. /Dihydrate/
Trisodium citrate has the chemical formula of Na3C6H5O7. It is sometimes referred to simply as sodium citrate, though sodium citrate can refer to any of the three sodium salts of citric acid. It possesses a saline, mildly tart flavor. It is mildly basic and can be used along with citric acid to make biologically compatible buffers.
