The stability of ampicillin sodium in soln is concn dependent and decreased as the concn of the drug increases. Ampicillin sodium appears to be especially susceptible to inactivation in soln containing dextrose, which appears to have a catalytic effect on hydrolysis of the drug.

Ampicillin sodium Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Derived from ampicillin salt: Suspend ampicillin in water, adjust pH to 9 with sodium hydroxide solution, dissolve, and filter. The filtrate is decolorized with activated carbon, filtered, and the filtrate is dried at low temperature to obtain a product.

Uses

diuretic, anti-hypertensive

Drug Function and Efficacy

Broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin has a broad-spectrum killing effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It has a strong antibacterial effect on hemolytic streptococci, pneumococci and non-penicillinase-producing staphylococci, which is similar to or slightly inferior to penicillin. It also has a good antibacterial effect on viridans streptococci, and is better than penicillin on enterococci and listeria. It is effective against Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Actinomyces, Haemophilus influenzae, Bordetella pertussis and Neisseria.
