Methods of Manufacturing

Dissolve benzoin in hot pyridine, then cool to solidify, grind and slowly add thionyl chloride, stir vigorously, and keep it cool. A large amount of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride are released during the reaction. The reaction product is washed with water, filtered to dryness, and recrystallized from ethanol to obtain benzophenone.
