Methods of Manufacturing

It is derived from the reaction of n-hexadecyl alcohol and phosphorus triiodide. Heat n-hexadecanol, red phosphorus and iodine together to melt the cetyl alcohol, continue heating to about 150°C, and stir for 5 hours. Cool to room temperature and extract with ether. After the extract is washed and dried, the ether is distilled off, and the remainder is subjected to vacuum distillation to collect 220-225°C (2.93kPa) fractions to obtain the finished product. The yield is about 80%.

Used in the synthesis of detergents and organic synthesis
