Methyl isothiocyanate Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Using monomethylamine, carbon disulfide and ethyl chloroformate as raw materials, it is prepared through the following steps. The carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide solution were mixed and cooled to 10-15°C, and a 35% methylamine aqueous solution was added within 0.5h. Warm stirring for 1-2h to complete the reaction and produce a bright red solution. It was cooled to 35-40°C, and ethyl chloroformate was added dropwise with stirring. After the addition, stirring was continued for 30 min, and the temperature was lowered to about 30°C. The upper layer isothiocyanate is separated, dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then fractionated, and the fraction collected at 115-121°C is the finished product. The yield is about 70%.

Uses

Pesticide; soil fumigant.
