DMF (50 mL) is added to a mixture of cytosine (8.333 g, 75 mmol) with N-iodosuccinimide (18.562 g, 82.5 mmol) under Ar. The vessel is covered in foil and ultrasonicated for 30 min to disrupt the solid mass at the bottom of the vessel. The mixture is then stirred for an additional 12 h, the still heterogeneous reaction mixture is added to water (150 mL).
