COSCO SHIPPING Terminals Release Q1 Results

Facing the outbreak of COVID-19, terminals under COSCO SHIPPING Ports (CSP) published their hard-won business results for the first quarter of 2020.

In the fight against the epidemic, the Xiamen Ocean Gate Terminal accelerated its smart port construction. The terminal has utilized “5G + new technology” to independently develop diversified product offerings, such as electronic B/L, and promoted automation in job arrangement, berth planning, and ship scheduling. Through these efforts, the terminal has not only realized “zero-touch” face-to-face service but also slashed the human and time costs for the circulation of documents, thus easing the labor shortage and guaranteeing a smooth collection and distribution system. During the first quarter, Xiamen Ocean Gate Terminal helped maintain the high efficiency of Xiamen Port as it achieved 100% direct berthing of ships, a ship productivity of 129U/H, and an average detention time of external container trucks at the terminal of less than 25min/truck. In addition, its bulk cargo throughput fulfilled 25% of the annual target, an increase of over 36% year-on-year.

In March, the Weitou port area of Jinjiang Pacific Terminal saw an over 3% increase in its container throughput compared to the same period last year. The container throughput of Shanghai PanAsia Shipping hit 54,000 TEU, a record monthly high since the terminal was open to service. By taking a customer-oriented approach, optimizing the allocation of routes, and improving service management, the terminal has ensured the normal operations of various routes and posted steady profit growth.

As the international epidemic situation becomes increasingly severe, the Quanzhou Pacific Terminal, located in Shishi, the famous hometown of overseas Chinese, has taken measures to control the import of COVID-19 and ensure safe production. In the first quarter of this year, the terminal reported a bulk cargo throughput of around 630,000 tons. In March, it handled six ships carrying imported quarried stone and achieved total throughput of over 175,000 tons. On March 28, M.V. XING FU SONG, a ship loaded with imported quarried stone, finished discharging at the Shihu port area after nearly 70 hours of operation.

In March, Nantong Tonghai Terminal registered a month-on-month increase of over 63% in its container throughput, returning to the level before the outbreak of COVID-19 and setting a new monthly high since the terminal commenced operations. To effectively solve operational bottlenecks, the terminal has promoted a production guarantee system and established a response mechanism covering the entire chain of “berthing-handling-container yard.” As a result, a container can be handled in less than two minutes, and the average efficiency is improved to 30.2 TEU/hour.

During the first quarter, the Port of Piraeus in Greece maintained growth momentum with a year-on-year increase of 3.9% in its cumulative container throughput. PCT recorded a total container throughput of about 1.23 million TEU.

Benefiting from the Ocean Alliance, CSP Zeebrugge Terminal saw an over 70% year-on-year rise in its container throughput in Q1 of 2020.

In the first quarter, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal handled 109 ships, generating a throughput of 158,000 TEU. After M.V. COSCO SHIPPING PLANET was unloaded on March 6, the terminal’s cumulative throughput first surpassed the 500,000 TEU since it came into service. The terminal also hit a new high in several indicators, such as GMPH (Gross Move Per Hour) and BMPH (Berth Move Per Hour). The average total crane moves per hour reached 24.3 MPH, up 21.6% over the previous year.
