New research: Camellia extract can reduce postprandial blood glucose levels

Recently, a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) funded by FANCL found that intake of camellia extract, mulberry leaf extract and chitosan can reduce postprandial blood glucose and triglyceride levels in healthy subjects. Two clinical trials confirmed that the blood glucose and triglyceride levels of subjects in the experimental group were significantly reduced compared with the placebo group.

Evidence for clinical research


In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, FANCL recruited 40 subjects for the blood glucose study, 50 subjects for the blood triglyceride study, and the participants in any trial were all aged 20 Healthy people between 65 years old. The test group was given capsules containing camellia extract, mulberry leaf extract and chitosan. Blood samples are collected at regular intervals.


The researchers used AUC (Area Under the Curve) as an indicator to monitor changes in blood concentration over time. In this study, the lower the value, the lower the increase in blood glucose and triglyceride levels.


In the first trial, subjects took 150 ml of water to take the test or placebo food. After 10 minutes, they were asked to consume 200 grams of rice. Blood was collected at 0 minutes before meal, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes after meal. The researchers found that the AUC (68.6 mg.h / dL) of postprandial blood glucose levels in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group (80.1 mg.h / dL) (p <0/05).


In the second trial, the subjects took the test or placebo food with 150 ml of water. After 15 minutes, they were asked to drink a bowl of soup containing 40 grams of total fat (in order to imitate a high-fat diet). Blood was collected at 0 minutes before meals and at 2, 3, 4, and 6 hours after meals. The researchers found that the AUC (293.6 mg.h / dL) of post-prandial blood triglyceride levels in the experimental group was significantly lower than the placebo group (391.3 mg.h / dL) (p <0.001).


The researchers said that from these research data, it can be found that eating foods containing camellia extract, mulberry leaf extract and chitosan can inhibit the absorption of sugar and fat by the diet, and inhibit postprandial blood glucose levels and postprandial blood glycerin Increased levels of triesters.
