Ukraine publishes draft restrictions on vinyl chloride in contact with food
On October 31, 2022, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine issued a draft limit on vinyl chloride in contact with food, limiting the concentration of vinyl chloride monomer (CAS 75-01-4) in food contact materials or articles to 1 mg/kg.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) lists vinyl chloride as a carcinogen. Vinyl chloride and other monomers are components of polymers, such as plastics, rubber, and silicones, that can migrate into food. Vinyl chloride is specifically used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. In June 2022, Ukraine became an official candidate for membership in the European Union. Ukraine issued the draft to align national chemical management regulations and food contact material standards with EU regulations.
The deadline for notification and comment is January 3, 2023.
