European Union officially approves Remdesivir as a coronavirus treatment drug

ECHEMI 2020-07-06

The European Commission recently announced that it officially approved Remdesivir as the first EU drug to treat new coronavirus infections.

On June 25, the European Medicines Agency formally recommended Remdesivir as the EU's first treatment for new coronavirus infections. In the European Union, it takes an average of 67 days for a new drug to be recommended by the European Medicines Agency until it is approved by the European Commission, but it takes only one week for Remdesivir.

European Commissioner Stella Kyriakidis, who is responsible for health and food safety, said in a statement on the 3rd: "The first drug approved today for the treatment of new coronavirus infection is important for combating the new coronavirus One step. We approved it less than a month after (redxive was submitted), which clearly shows the EU’s determination to respond quickly when new treatments are available. We will spare no effort to obtain highly effective treatments against the novel coronavirus or vaccine."

Remdesivir is developed and manufactured by American Gilead Technology Company. Recently, some foreign media reported that the US government has placed an order to purchase the company's related products for the entire July and 90% of the products in August and September, triggering international concerns about the supply of Remdesivir. The Director of the Danish Medicines Agency, Thomas Sendlovitz, told the media that this undoubtedly caused dissatisfaction throughout the EU, and (we) will discuss how to avoid such a situation in the future.

According to foreign media reports, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands have said that there is currently enough Remdesivir.
