UK Supermarket Giants To Phase Out Plastic Straws

United Kingdom retail giants Tesco and Morrison's have announced plans to remove all disposable straws from their shelves starting later this year.

The environmental website Change.org said in two separate reports that the two supermarket and retail giants made the decisions following its sustainability campaigns, which attracted over 170,000 supporters for Morrison's and 270,000 for Tesco.

According to Change, Morrison's has committed to replacing plastic straws in its stores with straws made of paper by June, while Tesco will remove all disposable plastic straws from its shelves by the end of 2019.

Tesco has announced that it will replace the entire range with "eco-friendly alternatives."

Plastic straws will also be phased out of all of Tesco cafes, which will take over 1 million plastic straws out of circulation every year.

"It's taken over a year to come this far and I can't thank you all enough - your signatures, shares and social media action made every bit of difference," said Clare Jones, who led the project for Change.
