In 2022, Japan notified China's food violations of the Japanese Food Sanitation Law

According to statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, in 2022, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported a total of 160 cases of food violations imported from China to Japan. It mainly involved 47 product categories, including vegetables and vegetable products (36 cases), nuts and fruit products (21 cases), aquatic products and their products (17 cases), processed foods (15 cases) and cereals and cereal products (14 cases). The reasons for violations mainly focus on microbial contamination, biotoxins, pesticide residues and food additives. The details are as follows:

In the first quarter of 2022, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare notified a total of 35 cases of food violations imported into Japan. From the perspective of the types of food involved and the reasons for the violations, they mainly involved vegetables and vegetable products (12 cases), aquatic products and aquatic products (6 cases), nuts and nut products (6 cases) and condiments (5 cases). The reasons for violations were concentrated in biotoxins (9 cases), microbial contamination (11 cases), pesticide residues (9 cases), and food additives (6 cases).

In the second quarter of 2022, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported a total of 32 cases of food violations imported to Japan in China. From the perspective of the types of food involved and the reasons for the violations, they mainly involved nuts and nut products (15 cases), vegetables and vegetable products (6 cases), processed foods (3 cases) and cereals and cereal products (3 cases). The reasons for violations were concentrated in biotoxins (14 cases) and microbial contamination (8 cases), pesticide residues (5 cases), mold deterioration (2 cases), product quality (2 cases) and food additives (1 case).

In the third quarter of 2022, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported a total of 47 cases of food violations imported to Japan in China. From the perspective of the types of food involved and the reasons for the violations, they mainly involved vegetables and vegetable products (15 cases), nuts and nut products (11 cases), processed foods (7 cases) and aquatic products and their products (6 cases). The reasons for violations were concentrated in microbial contamination (13 cases), pesticide residues (12 cases), biotoxins (10 cases), food additives (9 cases) and product quality (2 cases).

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported a total of 46 cases of food violations imported to Japan in China. From the perspective of the types of food involved and the reasons for the violations, they mainly involved vegetables and vegetable products (14 cases), aquatic products and aquatic products (13 cases), cereals and cereal products (7 cases) and nuts and nut products (4 cases). The reasons for violations were concentrated in microbial contamination (24 cases), pesticide residues (12 cases), biotoxins (5 cases), and food additives (5 cases).

Among the 160 non-compliance cases counted above, the main reasons for non-compliance are as follows:

1. Microbial contamination and biotoxins

Among the cases involving microbial contamination violations, there were many cases of E. coli, coliform bacteria and bacteria in vegetables and vegetable products, aquatic products and aquatic products exceeding the standard. The number of cases of nuts and nut products being notified due to aflatoxin excesses is also higher.

2. Pesticide residues

Among the cases involving pesticide residue violations, 6 pesticide types were involved, including pyriflorine (8 cases), thiamethoxam (8 cases), humilide (4 cases), ciproconazole (2 cases), chlorpyrifos (1 case) and enoylmorpholine (1 case), mainly involving vegetables and vegetable products, cereals and cereal products.

3. Food additives

Among the cases involving food additive violations, preservatives and sweeteners exceeded the standard, including sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, sulfur dioxide, polysorbate, TBHQ and cyclamate, mainly involving condiments, processed foods, vegetables and vegetable products, grains and cereal products.
