Evonik invests 25 million euros to upgrade MMP plant in Germany

Evonik has announced an investment of €25 million to upgrade and expand its methionine intermediate 3-methylthiopropanal (MMP) production plant in Wetherling, Germany. This latest initiative will further strengthen its global methionine production network. The retrofit and expansion of the Wetherling plant uses a newly developed manufacturing process that avoids the storage of chemical intermediates such as acrolein at the plant.

MMP is an integral part in the production of Evonik MetAMINO acid (DL-methionine). This methionine precursor has been produced at the Wetherling plant for more than 50 years. "This investment protects the long-term supply of MMP at our plant in Antwerp, Belgium, and enhances the integrated MetAMINO production capacity in Europe," said Dr. Gaetano Blanda, global head of Evonik's Animal Nutrition Business line. This move demonstrates our commitment to better serve the global DL-methionine market and to ensure a safe and reliable supply for our customers."
