An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has occurred in Germany

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 16 March 2023, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture reported to WOAH an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Germany.

The outbreak, located in Kochm-Zell, Rhineland-Palatinate Prefecture, was confirmed on 16 March 2023. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Clinical and laboratory tests found 817 birds suspected of infection, of which 98 became ill and died, and 719 were killed and disposed of.

As the outbreak continues, Germany's Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture will submit weekly follow-up reports.
