L’Oréal invests in US biotech company Debut to create active ingredients

ECHEMI 2023-06-06

On June 1st, American biotech company Debut announced the completion of a $34 million B-round financing, with French beauty company L'Oréal's venture capital fund BOLD (Business Opportunities for L'Oréal Development) leading the investment and acquiring a minority stake.

Debut was founded in 2019 and headquartered in San Diego, California, USA. It is a vertically integrated synthetic biotechnology company specializing in end-to-end exploration, formulation, clinical trials, and production of new raw materials and products. Its cell-free cutting-edge biological manufacturing platform bypasses the limitations of traditional fermentation and can directly control biological processes to produce complex natural products such as polyphenols, biopolymers, and natural pigments due to its high efficiency Highly respected raw materials for their anti-aging and antioxidant properties.

Debut's new synthetic biotechnology greatly reduces complexity and enhances the mass production capacity of the product. By utilizing Debut's platform, new ingredients can be delivered in as little as six weeks from discovery to pre- production, covering a range of more effective and sustainable beauty products from moisturizers, essences to hair care. Currently, Debut not only has a production facility of 26000 square feet (approximately 2416 square meters) at its headquarters, but also has established an internal brand incubator.

Debut's Patent Bio2Consumer™ platform covers ingredient discovery, cell-free, biological fermentation, formulation, clinical trials, and brand creation. This platform utilizes cell-free and advanced fermentation methods, such as continuous biological manufacturing, to overcome the limitations of traditional methods and greatly reduce the demand for space, water, and expensive and unsustainable inputs. In addition to producing rare, high-value, and novel compounds, Debut's technology also optimizes traditional raw material composition manufacturing. This platform includes a proprietary database with over 3.8 million preclinical data points to search for and discover new ingredients that can meet the needs of beauty consumers. By overcoming the limitations of cell fermentation, Debut can quickly and sustainably produce high-value ingredients.

Through this investment, L'Oréal Group has become an exclusive investor in the beauty industry for Debut, which is able to quickly expand its production platform and better meet the growing market demand for breakthrough ingredients used in cosmetics, skincare products, and packaging.

L'Oréal Group pointed out that the existing joint development project between the two parties is the foundation of this investment. The collaborative project utilizes Debut's extensive intellectual property portfolio. It is reported that this intellectual property portfolio can create over 7000 high-value and more sustainable raw material ingredients, and the speed of market promotion is also faster.

“Debut has addressed a fundamental challenge in the beauty industry: driving innovation while breaking free from the resource intensive and environmental impacts of traditional manufacturing. Cellless biological manufacturing is not science fiction, it exists truly. We are delighted to be the first beauty company to invest in this technology with Debut. We are also delighted to collaborate with Debut to create outstanding active beauty while protecting Earth's resources Innovation.” Said Barbara Lavernos, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Research, Innovation and Technology, at L’Oréal group.
