Japanese Chemical Company Sees Potential Niche Market in EUV Chip Manufacturing Materials
Osaka Organic Chemical Industry, a high-end chemical manufacturer used in the production of chips in Japan, is betting on the potential market for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography materials. EUV lithography is a method used to manufacture advanced chips. Osaka Organic Chemical Industry, though relatively unknown in its own country, has opened up a critical niche market in the semiconductor industry by supplying companies that produce photoresist. Photoresist is a photosensitive chemical used to etch patterns on wafers. It currently holds a 70% share in the market for the ArF monomer used in photoresists and now aims to grow in the chemical market for EUV resist - an area that is becoming increasingly important as the global semiconductor industry is expected to double in value by 2030.

Masayuki Ando, President of Osaka Organic Chemical Industry, expressed confidence in the company's ability to compete in the EUV resist market in an interview with Reuters, stating "I have confidence that we can compete." In many ways, Osaka Organic Chemical Industry is a symbol of Japan's chip manufacturing industry today. The world's third-largest economy was once a global chip manufacturing giant but later lost its dominant position to competitors in the United States, Taiwan, and South Korea.
The market for EUV materials is expected to grow along with the demand for advanced chips. EUV lithography is a cutting-edge technology that uses a 13.5-nanometer wavelength light source to pattern silicon wafers, which is essential for manufacturing chips with a minimum feature size of less than 10 nanometers. The technology is expected to be crucial in the development of new applications such as artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and the Internet of Things.
Osaka Organic Chemical Industry is not the only company that sees the potential in the EUV resist market. Other leading chemical companies such as Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co. and JSR Corp. are also investing in the development of EUV resist materials. However, Osaka Organic Chemical Industry's strong position in the ArF monomer market and its experience in the semiconductor industry give it an advantage in this emerging market.
