Sumitomo Chemical builds new resin plant in Poland

ECHEMI 2021-03-03

Recently, Sumitomo Chemical said that it will build a new polypropylene (PP) resin plant for household appliances and automobiles in Poland, and the new plant will be named SPCP. The investment in the construction of the new plant is expected to reach hundreds of millions of yen, and it is planned to be completed and put into operation in the spring of 2022. The new plant will produce PP compounds made of glass fibers and additives mixed with PP, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons. Accordingly, the production capacity of polypropylene resin materials in Europe will increase by 20%. Analysts said that the production bases of home appliances and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in Eastern Europe are increasing, and the demand for resin materials will also increase significantly. The material is widely used in automobile bumpers, interior materials, washing machine shells and other household appliances. Due to its light weight and easy molding, the demand for the manufacture of battery boxes for electric vehicles has increased significantly in recent years.

Previously, Sumitomo Chemical's PP compound production bases in Europe were established in the UK and France. The company's establishment of a new plant in Poland will enable the needs of household appliances and electric car manufacturers in Germany, the Czech Republic and other countries to be supplied in a timely manner. In addition, with the further strengthening of environmental regulations and circular economy policies, Sumitomo Chemical also plans to use recycled PP with a content of 60% to 100% to produce PP compounds. Sumitomo Chemical said that in the future, it will continue to improve and strengthen the production and sales system of PP compounds to meet the growing customer demand and expand market share.
