Huafon Group Signed a Strategic Cooperation with Covestro! Focus on Bio-Based MDI!

ECHEMI 2023-11-08

On November 6, during the 6th China International Import Expo, Huafon Group and Covestro signed a letter of intent for strategic cooperation to actively explore and expand the application of low-carbon raw materials in products and jointly promote the development of circular economy. Huafon Group Chairman Feiyu You and Covestro's Global Head of Functional Materials Division and Executive Vice President Hermann-Josef Doerholt and other representatives from both parties attended the signing ceremony.

According to the letter of intent signed this time, the two parties will further cooperate closely to jointly develop low-carbon solutions to reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact of polyurethane low-carbon series products such as microfiber leather, thermoplastic polyurethane, sole solution, leather slurry and spandex. The collaboration will focus on MDI produced by Covestro based on a mass balance approach, which results in a lower carbon footprint due to the use of alternative raw materials containing plant waste.

"The new strategic cooperation plan reflects our determination to create a more sustainable future." Feiyu You said, he is full of expectations for this deepened cooperation and hopes that through close cooperation with Covestro, "We can empower each other in both directions on the road to sustainable development, accelerate exchanges and cooperation between the two parties in areas such as sustainable material innovation, and develop more innovative low-carbon solutions."

"The signing of the letter of intent also demonstrates our mutual firm commitment to combating climate change and promoting the circular economy." Hermann-Josef Doerholt said.

MDI is a key ingredient in polyurethane production and is widely used in the automotive, construction, electronics and other industries. From a traditional production perspective, MDI is produced from fossil raw materials, and bio-based MDI has significant environmental advantages. According to Covestro's partner Selena, a leading company in the field of construction chemicals, compared with fossil-based raw materials, the carbon footprint of bio-based MDI is reduced by 60%.
