UmiCool: Innovative Daytime Radiative Cooling Coating Attracts Attention in China's Overseas Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
On October 25th, 2023, the China leg of the China Overseas Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition will be held at the Nansha International Talent Port in Guangzhou. During the excellent project roadshow segment, UmiCool, a daytime radiative cooling coating developed by Professor Dai Jianguo's team at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, caught the attention of many investors.
According to Southern Finance reporter, based on this technology, the technology company Xumei Green Energy has established its own production line in Qingyuan, with an annual capacity of 260,000 tons of coatings. Operations director Luo Zhuojun told reporters that the purpose of the Nansha event is clear - to "find orders." He hopes to collaborate with the government to promote the widespread application of green cooling coatings in the industrial and construction sectors, conduct pilot tests in Nansha, and gradually expand into the Greater Bay Area market in the future.
It is reported that the UmiCool material, after technological transformation, has significantly higher infrared emissivity (0.9491) and solar reflectivity (97.6%) compared to the previous generation of coatings. When exposed to direct sunlight, the surface of the coating can be lower than the ambient temperature by 8.9 degrees Celsius. It also maintains excellent performance in harsh environments such as high temperatures, water immersion, mechanical abrasion, and exposure to wind and sunlight. Currently, the company has collaborated with the Hong Kong Home Affairs Department to apply UmiCool to selected buildings in Hong Kong, reducing cooling costs and extending the lifespan of the buildings. By mitigating the urban heat island effect, it ultimately contributes to carbon neutrality efforts.
The innovative UmiCool daytime radiative cooling coating, developed by Professor Dai Jianguo's team at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has garnered significant attention at the China Overseas Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Xumei Green Energy, the technology company incubated based on this technology, has established a production facility in Qingyuan with substantial coating manufacturing capabilities. The company aims to collaborate with the government to promote the widespread use of green cooling coatings in industrial and construction applications, starting with a pilot project in Nansha and gradually expanding into the Greater Bay Area market. By leveraging UmiCool's exceptional properties, such as high infrared emissivity and solar reflectivity, the coating offers potential benefits in reducing cooling costs, extending building lifespans, and mitigating the urban heat island effect, contributing to carbon neutrality goals.
