The market is over $500 million! Whose 'rice bowl' did the explosive Pyroxasulfone rob?

2023-12-15

Pyroxasulfone is an Isoxazole herbicide developed by Japanese Kumiai Chemical. Since its listing in 2011, it has shown a strong momentum of growth worldwide, and the market demand has continued to expand, and its global sales reached 135 million US dollars in 2016, successfully promoting it to hundreds of millions of US dollars tonnage varieties. The active ingredient patent in China expired in 2022.

Due to the sharp increase in sales in the United States, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and other markets, the Pyroxasulfone market ushered in a renewed outbreak. Between 2021 and 2022, Pyroxasulfone sales increased rapidly to $400 million, a year-on-year growth rate of 53%. According to Japanese Kumiai Chemical, the Pyroxasulfone market will further grow to $536 million in 2023.

Chinese enterprises are also gradually developing the registration layout of Pyroxasulfone. Take Australia as an example, up to now, at least 10 Chinese enterprises have obtained the registration of Pyroxasulfone, including Max (Rudong) Chemical, Anhui Jiuyi, CNYDA, Shandong Binong and so on, SUNJOY Agro also completed the relevant registration.

Rainbow also involved Pyroxasulfone, an annual output of 2000 tons of Pyroxasulfone technical project approved for the record. It is understood that Rainbowhave already completed the relevant product planning and completed the registration layout planning in China and the world's important target countries of Pyroxasulfone. It is expected to obtain registration certificates in China's domestic and many important overseas markets in the second half of 2024, and enter different target markets in the first half of 2025. At the same time, a number of patents have been applied for active ingredient manufacturing, formulation compositions and applications.

The herbicide spectra of Pyroxasulfone were similar to those of Acetochlor, Metolachlor and other amide herbicides, but its activity was much higher than that of 2-Chloroacetamide herbicides such as Acetochlor and Metolachlor. In addition, etachlor and metolachlor have been banned in the European Union, and S-metolachlor is also banned because of its potential endocrine disrupting effects. In the future, Pyroxasulfone will expand the application range of crops by combining with classic herbicides and other ways, and it will likely become a popular variety to replace Acetochlor, Metolachlor and other products, and the market demand will further increase.
