Vitamins to Help With Bruising: The Cause and Treatment of Bruising
What are vitamins to help with bruising? What are bruises? How are bruises formed? We often find unexplained bruises on certain parts of our bodies but have difficulty recalling their origin. Most of the time, there's no need to worry about these bruises as they usually heal on their own.
What are bruises, and why do they occur?
Bruises are marks on our skin that result from the accumulation of blood in a specific area. When blood doesn't flow within your blood vessels but gets trapped under your skin, bruises become visible. It may take several days, weeks, or even months for bruises to disappear. If a bruise is caused by trauma to the skin, like being hit by a hard object, blood leaks from the subcutaneous blood vessels, and the bruise becomes apparent within minutes.
Sometimes, the bleeding may originate from deeper within the body, such as from a broken bone in the arm or leg, and in such cases, the bruise typically appears several days later. Applying ice or something cold to the bruise can alleviate pain. Over the next few days, as the trapped blood gradually disperses or gets absorbed, the bruise changes color from purple to yellowish-brown and eventually heals.

Some dietary supplements may lead to unexplained bruises, including arnica, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil capsules), saw palmetto (used for improving prostate health), and vitamin E. Before taking any dietary supplements for any reason, it's essential to consult with a doctor. Dietary supplements not only can interact with other prescription medications you might be taking, but they are also not regulated by the FDA, which means they could potentially contribute to frequent bruising.
Women tend to experience bruises more frequently than men. Men have thicker skin and more collagen, which helps protect blood vessels and shield them from damage. Estrogen is also one of the factors contributing to unexplained bruises. Research suggests that estrogen can prevent the formation of blood vessel walls and act as a vasodilator, meaning it can open up blood vessels. If trauma occurs, more blood may escape before it can clot.
As we age, our skin becomes thinner, and blood vessels become more fragile, making us more susceptible to unexplained bruises. Thinner skin results in a loss of the fat and collagen that previously protected blood vessels. Blood vessels also lose their elasticity, making them more prone to rupture.
Hemophilia is a blood disorder that makes individuals more prone to bruising. It's a rare condition that affects the ability to clot, leading to severe bleeding from minor injuries.
Deficiencies in vitamins C and K can lead to unexplained bruising. However, these deficiencies typically only occur in populations with severe malnutrition.
How do vitamins help with bruising?
Although vitamins do not work directly as a remedy for bruising, they are essential in promoting healthy skin and blood vessel growth. For instance, some of the vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin K may be helpful when recovering from bruises.
Vitamin C: The skin structure and health depend on this main nutrient. It’s a main part of collagen, which strengthens the wall of blood vessels hence decreasing the possibility of bruising or bleeding. Vitamin C also facilitates wound healing and tissue repair.
Vitamin K: Vitamin K is an important player when it comes to blood clotting and bleeding regulation. Vitamin K deficiency makes you liable for excessive bleeding and bruises. As such, Vitamin K helps in promoting good blood-clotting and reducing bruises.
In addition to the role of vitamins to help with bruising, the treatment of bruises typically encompasses a range of simple care measures aimed at relieving bruising symptoms and facilitating the healing process. Firstly, one may use cold compresses applied to the affected area to reduce discomfort and inflammation at an injury site. The bruised area is applied some ice wrapped in a cloth for about fifteen to twenty minutes multiple times. You can also elevate the injured location to assist in draining out the excess fluids as well as reducing inflammation. It is essential to avoid any action that might aggravate the bruise by not applying pressure or further impact to the damaged part.
The pain resulting from the bruise can be dealt with the over –over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and acetaminophen. However, one should follow the instructions for using the drug or seek a healthcare provider’s advice. Moreover, one needs to protect the skin that has been bruised by not tying it too strongly so as to avoid more agony and probable harm to the damaged skin. Bruises are normally resolved on their own in a few days or weeks without treatment. Bruises change colors over time until they disappear.
However, in cases where a bruise is intense and is associated with other health problems or following extreme injury, one should visit a doctor and have the appropriate medication provided based on the gravity of the situation.
