Who Will Emerge as the Pharmaceutical Leader in 2024?
In the fiercely competitive pharmaceutical industry of 2024, major pharmaceutical companies are striving to innovate and secure a leading position in the market. Which drugs will shine on this highly competitive stage and write their own glorious chapter in 2024? Who will be the "Pharmaceutical King" and dominate the field of medicine?
1. Forecasted Top Ten Revenue in 2024:
Keytruda claimed the throne as the "Pharmaceutical King" in 2023, and it is expected to retain that position in 2024, with one condition—excluding Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, which are all based on semaglutide as the active substance. If we consider these three sibling drugs together, semaglutide will be the "Pharmaceutical King" of 2024, with projected annual sales surpassing $28 billion. Otherwise, Keytruda will secure the first position, followed by Ozempic.
Notably, Humira, which has long dominated the "Pharmaceutical King" title, will drop out of the top ten list in 2024. Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, Comirnaty, which topped the charts in 2022, is expected to maintain its position in the top ten with sales exceeding $10 billion. However, Pfizer's projected sales for this product in 2024 are $8 billion, deviating slightly from Evaluate's estimate.
Merck's HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, is expected to surpass $10 billion in sales by 2024, partly due to the expanding demand in developing regions.
2. Ranking of Revenue Growth:
Based on the revenue growth between 2023 and 2024, the top spot in the list of the ten fastest-growing drugs will be claimed by Novo Nordisk's weight loss drug, Wegovy, with sales growth exceeding $4 billion.
In the second position, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic, packaged with semaglutide, is expected to generate over $3 billion in additional revenue in 2024. If we combine Lilly's tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, and Zepbound for obesity, it will achieve annual sales growth of over $3.5 billion.
3. Global Pharmaceutical Company Rankings in 2024:
According to Evaluate Pharma's predictions, Roche will dominate the pharmaceutical industry in terms of sales in 2024. Despite recent setbacks in its pipeline, Roche's existing biologic franchise, led by Ocrevus for multiple sclerosis, and its cancer drugs Tecentriq and Hemlibra for treating hemophilia, continue to generate substantial revenue for this Swiss pharmaceutical giant.
When it comes to the number of blockbuster products, Roche stands out among other pharmaceutical giants, with an estimated 17 Roche products expected to exceed $1 billion in sales in 2024. The projected annual revenues of the top five companies (Roche, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, AbbVie, Pfizer) are all expected to exceed $50 billion.
In terms of market capitalization, Eli Lilly will claim the top spot, with Novo Nordisk in the second position.
4. Ranking of Revenue Growth for Pharmaceutical Companies in 2024:
While Novo Nordisk may temporarily hold the last position in the revenue ranking, it secures the first position in terms of revenue growth.
With the strong momentum of Ozempic and Wegovy, Novo Nordisk is set to generate nearly $8 billion in additional revenue in 2024. Eli Lilly's revenue growth is expected to reach nearly $5 billion, ranking second.
5. Focus on New Drug Approvals in 2024:
Alzheimer's disease will be a focal point in 2024. Eli Lilly eagerly awaits the approval of its asset, donanemab. Once launched, donanemab will directly compete with Biogen's Aduhelm, which is already on the market in the United States.
Madrigal's asset, resmetirom, for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), previously known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is generating interest as it aims to become the first FDA-approved drug for this condition, filling a significant treatment gap.
