EU Evaluates Authorization Renewal Application for Genetically Modified Maize MON 810
In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has assessed the authorization renewal application for genetically modified maize MON 810 in the European Union (EU). This evaluation by the EFSA's Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) aims to determine whether there are any new risks or uncertainties associated with MON 810.
The European Union has taken a significant step in evaluating the authorization renewal application for the genetically modified maize MON 810. On January 19, 2024, the EFSA announced that its GMO Panel had conducted a comprehensive assessment of the application.
Following a thorough evaluation, the GMO Panel concluded that the application, identified as GMFF-2022-9450, does not provide evidence of new hazards, modified exposure levels, or scientific uncertainties that would alter the original risk assessment conducted on MON 810. This means that the current conclusions regarding the safety of MON 810 remain unchanged.
The renewal application, submitted by Bayer Agriculture BV under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003, requested authorization for the continued use of MON 810 for food and feed purposes, excluding cultivation within the EU. The application included various data sources such as post-market environmental monitoring reports, literature evaluations, additional studies, and updated bioinformatics analyses.
The EFSA's evaluation focused on assessing potential new risks or uncertainties that may have arisen since the original authorization. It is important to note that the evaluation assumes the DNA sequence of MON 810 in the renewal application is identical to the initially assessed event.
The outcome of this evaluation is significant for both stakeholders and consumers.
