In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) evaluated the safety and effectiveness of endo-1,4-β-xylanase as a feed additive for all swine species. The evaluated feed additive, endo-1,4-β-xylanase, is produced by Komagataella phaffii ATCC PTA-127053, a strain of yeast. The expert panel concluded that under the recommended conditions of use, the additive is safe for the target species, consumers, and the environment. However, due to insufficient data, no definitive conclusion could be reached regarding its efficacy.
Safety Assessment:
The FEEDAP Panel determined that endo-1,4-β-xylanase is safe for all growing swine and lactating sows when used at the minimum recommended level. It was also considered safe for consumers and the environment when incorporated into swine feed. However, it was identified as a potential dermal and respiratory sensitiser, although it was not found to be irritant to the eyes and skin.
Effectiveness Evaluation:
Due to the lack of adequate data, the expert panel was unable to provide a conclusive assessment of the additive's effectiveness for all swine species.
The EFSA assessment on the safety and effectiveness of endo-1,4-β-xylanase as a feed additive for swine indicates that, under the recommended conditions, it poses no significant risks to the target animals, consumers, or the environment. However, further studies are needed to determine its efficacy fully.
