EU Approves Updated Authorization Application for Lactic Acid Bacteria DSM 22502 as an Animal Feed Additive
In a recent development, the European Union (EU) has granted approval for the updated authorization application of lactic acid bacteria DSM 22502 as an animal feed additive. The decision comes after a thorough evaluation conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Let's delve into the details of this significant decision and its implications.
On March 6, 2024, the EFSA released a scientific opinion regarding the safety and efficacy of Enterococcus lactis DSM 22502 as a technological feed additive for all animal species. The applicant provided evidence demonstrating compliance with the existing conditions of authorization for the additive currently available on the market.
The evaluation conducted by a panel of experts concluded that the additive is safe for the target species, consumers, and the environment when used under authorized conditions. The FEEDAP Panel, responsible for the assessment, reiterated their previous conclusions regarding the safety and efficacy of DSM 22502, stating that it remains safe for all animal species. Additionally, the panel determined that the additive does not cause irritation to the skin or eyes. However, it is considered a respiratory sensitizer, and further evaluation is required to assess its potential to cause skin sensitization.
Significantly, the evaluation emphasized that there is no need to assess the efficacy of the additive during the renewal of its authorization. This decision streamlines the process and acknowledges the existing knowledge regarding the additive's effectiveness.
The EU's approval of the updated authorization application for lactic acid bacteria DSM 22502 as an animal feed additive marks an important milestone. The evaluation conducted by the EFSA affirmed the safety of the additive for all animal species, consumers, and the environment. With this decision, the EU ensures the continued availability of a trusted and authorized feed additive that contributes to animal nutrition and welfare.
