Vietnam's Fruit and Vegetable Exports Reach $1.25 Billion in Q1 2024

ECHEMI 2024-03-26

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry has achieved significant growth in the first quarter of 2024, with total exports amounting to approximately $1.25 billion. This marks a remarkable increase of 27% compared to the previous year. The surge in exports highlights the promising future prospects for the country's fruit and vegetable sector. Key markets driving this growth include China, South Korea, the United States, Thailand, and Japan. Let's delve deeper into the details of Vietnam's impressive performance in the global fruit and vegetable market.

According to the Vietnamese Communist Party's electronic newspaper, the first quarter of 2024 witnessed a substantial increase in the country's fruit and vegetable exports, reaching a total value of around $1.25 billion. This surge represents a significant growth rate of 27% compared to the same period last year.

The preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs reveal that in March 2024 alone, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports amounted to $433 million, indicating a 4% year-on-year increase. The first quarter of this year has been particularly remarkable, with total exports reaching $1.25 billion, marking the first time Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports have surpassed the $1 billion mark in the first quarter. This achievement underscores the immense growth potential of the fruit and vegetable industry in Vietnam.

The Secretary-General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Mr. Deng Fuyuan, attributed this success primarily to the contribution of off-season durian production. Notably, Thailand's increased purchasing power for Vietnamese durians has propelled it to become one of the top four export destinations for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.

In the first two months of this year, Vietnam witnessed a remarkable surge in exports to Thailand, with a staggering year-on-year increase of 125.9%. Consequently, Vietnam's market share in Thailand's fruit and vegetable market has risen from 2% to 4%.

Mr. Deng Fuyuan stated that the rapid recovery of Thailand's tourism industry has attracted a significant number of Chinese tourists who have a strong affinity for durians. However, since Thailand's durian supply is limited to only four months each year, Vietnam's year-round availability has driven increased imports to cater to the growing demand from tourists.

In addition to durians, Vietnam's major export products in the fruit and vegetable sector include dragon fruits, bananas, and mangoes, among others.

Simultaneously, during the first three months of this year, Vietnam also witnessed a substantial increase in imports of fruits and vegetables, totaling nearly $500 million, marking a year-on-year growth rate of 19%.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry has made significant strides in the first quarter of 2024, with exports reaching an impressive $1.25 billion. The remarkable growth rate of 27% highlights the immense potential of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable sector in the global market. With key markets like China, South Korea, the United States, Thailand, and Japan driving this growth, Vietnam is well-positioned to further expand its presence and capitalize on the increasing demand for high-quality fruits and vegetables.
