Can CaCl2 be classified as an acid or as a base?

Introduction:
Calcium chloride (CaCl2) is a salt with an ionic molecular structure that has the physical properties of being odorless, white in color, and a crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and ethanol. It is a hygroscopic compound and also poses to be a strong electrolyte by completely dissociating into calcium ions (Ca2+) and chloride ions (Cl-).
In nature, this salt is found as a rare mineral called "antarcticite and sinjarit. Both are hydrated forms of calcium chlorides and are found in regions high in salt minerals. It is commercially produced from the reaction of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with a strong acid like hydrochloric acid (HCl).
CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
Another common method in industries to produce Calcium chloride is the Solvay process. This method is not directly used to produce calcium chloride but is formed as a byproduct. In this reaction, limestone reacts with sodium chloride (NaCl) to produce sodium carbonate along with calcium chloride as a byproduct:
2NaCl + CaCO3 → Na2CO3 + CaCl2
What is the pH of Calcium chloride?
The pH of calcium chloride in a water solution is 7 marking it as neutral on the pH scale. To understand why its calcium chloride pH value is neutral, we need to first understand how the pH values work and we also need to take into account that calcium chloride is a salt produced from a strong acid (conjugate base).
The pH value of any substance indicates the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, in other words, it indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. In basic chemistry, we have learned that the neutralization reaction of a strong acid and a strong base produces a neutral or normal salt i.e. this salt will not show acidic or basic properties when dissolved in water after converting itself into its respective ions. This is because such ions will not affect H+ or OH- ions concentration and hence don’t alter pH values.
The same is the case with calcium chloride which has properties of a “normal or neutral” salt as it is formed when a base (CaCO3) and strong acid (HCl) react with each other (as explained above). When it is dissolved in water, the calcium and chloride ions undergo ionization but don’t affect H+ or OH- concentration in the water solution and just undergo physical change rather than chemical change. The introduction of calcium chloride in water can be shown as:
CaCl₂ + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + 2HCl
Common ions on both sides are equal and are canceled out hence there is no change in the acidic or basic ions. Now, the equation can be written as:
Ca²+ + 2Cl- + 2H₂O → Ca²+ + 2OH- + 2H+ + 2Cl-
Or simply:
CaCl2 → Ca2+ + 2Cl-
A strong base's conjugate acid is minimal or extremely weak. This is why Ca2+ ions won't react with any species and this behavior will maintain the pH at a level of 7. Some of the Ca2+ and Cl-ions may combine to produce an insoluble salt, but this will not have any impact on pH levels.
Next, halogens are known to originate from acids and the acid HCl (used in the synthesis of CaCl2) is where this ion comes from. Since this acid is extremely powerful, its conjugate base is either nonexistent or quite weak. Consequently, the pH won't be as affected by the chloride as well.
This is why, when calcium chloride salt is introduced into water, it dissociates in water but its ions do not interact with water to produce or consume hydrogen ions present in the solution. Thus, there is no observable change in the calcium chloride pH solution. In the real-world experimentation, pH might not be 7 due to impurities in the calcium chloride solid.
Conclusion:
The calcium chloride pH in a water solution is typically at 7 making it neutral. So, it cannot be classified as a base or an acid. This salt is produced from a reaction of a strong base and acid and when dissolved in water, it converts into calcium ions (Ca2+) and chloride ions (Cl-). These ions don’t affect the concentration of protons (H+) in a solution hence the pH value remains the same. In short, the strong acid and base interacted to generate a neutral salt, the resultant solution may be regarded as neutral. The neutral pH feature of this salt is useful in cement, and brine for refrigeration facilities, medical uses, etc.
