What is the Difference Between Aqueous, Molten, and Fused NaCl?
NaCI refers to sodium chloride, which is salt in our daily lives. It is one of the crucial nutrients for our bodies. Besides being added to food seasoning, it is also applied in healthcare and production. It has three main states: aqueous state, fused state, and molten state. Can you list some differences between these states of NaCI? What does molten mean and what is molten nacl? Maybe you have no idea. Then let’s find out together.
NaCl’s three different states
Before telling you the difference between aqueous, fused, and molten nacl, let’s learn some definitions such as what does molten mean?
Aqueous: A substance mixes with water and dissolved in it.
Molten: A substance is usually solid state at room temperature, it turns into a liquid when this substance is heated to a certain temperature. Generally, it refers to the liquid state of crystals with high melting points.
Fused: A substance is turned from molten to a solid state. The fused salt refers to the crystal state by certain conditions.
Below are the differences between aqueous, fused, and molten nacl.
1.Aqueous NaCl
It refers to NaCI aqueous solution, which is composed of water and NaCI. NaCI is a white solid and it is easily soluble in water. When NaCI dissolves in water, the ionization process occurs, there will be sodium ions and chloride ions.
Aqueous NaCI solutions are commonly used in many fields.
It is used as physiological saline to simulate the environment of human cell fluid. Physiological saline is a 0.9% aqueous NaCI solution, and because its osmotic pressure is roughly the same as that of normal human plasma and tissue fluid, it can be used for fluid replacement and other medical purposes.
It is also commonly used for in vitro culture of live tissues and cells. It can provide necessary nutrients and ions for the body cells. In medical processes such as surgery and wound management, physiological saline is applied a lot by doctors.
It is also used a lot in chemical experiments because it can provide two common ions: sodium ions and chloride ions. These ions mean a lot in many chemical reactions.
It also has many uses in industry. For example, it is used as an additive for metal surface treatment, and as a raw material for producing other chemicals. What’s more, it is also used as a refrigerant because the freezing point of saltwater is lower than that of pure water.
In the field of environmental science, it is often used to simulate marine and other saline environments to study the chemical and biological processes that occur in these environments.
When storing NaCI aqueous solution, it should be stored in a sealed container and in a dry, cool place. Although NaCI aqueous solutions are safe in most applications, high concentrations of solutions may cause irritation to the skin and eyes. If it comes into contact with skin or eyes, it should be immediately rinsed with plenty of water.
2.Molten NaCI
What does molten mean? We already know the answer from the previous passage. Then what is molten nacI and how to get it?
Sodium chloride’s crystal structure is a face-centered cubic lattice in the solid state. However, when sodium hydroxide is heated, it gradually undergoes biochemical reactions and changes into a liquid. NaCI will be melted at about 801℃. When the temperature exceeds this value, NaCI begins to melt and changes to the liquid state.
During the melting process, the physical properties of NaCI will undergo big changes. Firstly, its color will change from white to transparent. Secondly, because molten nacI ions can move freely and generate an electric current, it has good electric conduction and thermal conductivity. Besides, molten NaCI has a lower viscosity, which makes it much easier to flow and transfer heat.
Molten NaCI has the following applications.
It is used in salt production, alkali production, and metal extraction.
It is used in water heaters, solar water heaters, and other equipment to improve heat transfer efficiency.
It is also used in the food processing. Molten NaCI is used for pickling food to extend its shelf life.
3.Fused NaCI
Fused NaCI refers to the solid mass you get from the molten NaCI. The purity of fused NaCI obtained from the molten state is higher and there are fewer impurities. It is usually used in the medical or experimental fields.
Conclusion
This article mainly talks about three definitions: aqueous state, molten state, and fused state. What does molten mean? Now I guess it will be clear the differences between aqueous, fused, and molten nacl. They are the three different states of sodium chloride and each of them has its own applications in our lives.
