Nutrien Ltd announced its exit from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay
Recently, Fertilizer producer Nutrien Ltd has announced a major strategic change with the planned sale of its retail operations in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, aiming to focus resources and attention on key markets such as Brazil and other global markets to improve investor returns.
Nutrien Ltd has over 25 years of experience in the South American market. However, due to the sharp decline in fertilizer prices in the last quarter of 2023, the company's retail performance in the region fell short of expectations, forcing it to undertake business recovery and restructuring. In its annual report, Nutrien highlighted the adverse impact of Argentina's currency control policies on its international financial flows.
Nutrien is not the first company to exit in response to the challenging business environment in Argentina. A number of high-profile companies, including HSBC Holdings plc and Walmart Inc., have also pulled out of the Argentine market in recent years. In addition, agrochemical giant Bayer AG sold its soybean seed business in Argentina in 2021.
Nutrien has yet to clarify its disposal plans for its 50 percent stake in Profertil SA, a urea and ammonia producer in partnership with state-owned oil company YPF SA. YPF is focusing on divesting non-core assets and focusing on its shale drilling business.
Nutrien pledged to continue to support all of its customers and partners during the divestiture process. This announcement underscores Nutrien's focus on customer relationships and strong commitment to partners during the transformation of the business.
