AbbVie Ventures into Long-Acting Injectable Therapy with a $2 Billion Investment

ECHEMI 2024-04-19

In a significant development, pharmaceutical giant AbbVie has announced its collaboration with French-listed company Medincell to jointly develop and commercialize a range of therapeutic products across multiple treatment areas and indications. The partnership leverages Medincell's advanced long-acting injectable technology platform, with AbbVie committing a staggering $2 billion investment towards this endeavor.

AbbVie's collaboration with Medincell marks a strategic move aimed at revitalizing its product portfolio and bolstering its position in the pharmaceutical industry. The partnership entails AbbVie making an upfront payment of $35 million to Medincell, with the potential for development and commercial milestone payments totaling up to $315 million per project, culminating in a total investment of $2 billion. Additionally, AbbVie will receive single-digit to low double-digit royalties based on net sales.

Medincell's long-acting injectable technology platform, known as BEPO®, enables the sustained release of drugs over a period of days, weeks, or months with a single injection. This innovative delivery system forms a depot depositing a few millimeters of polymer subcutaneously, allowing for systemic or localized effects. BEPO® formulations comprise diblock (DB) and triblock (TB) copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic and water-soluble segments (polyethylene glycol-PEG) and hydrophobic and amorphous segments (poly(D,L-lactic acid)-PLA). The drug is captured within the polymer matrix and subsequently released through diffusion and polymer degradation. By adjusting the hydrophilicity and relative proportion of DB and TB, the water absorption and release kinetics of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) from the depot can be finely tuned.

AbbVie's partnership with Medincell holds promise across various therapeutic areas and indications, although specific details regarding whether it involves the improvement of AbbVie's existing drugs or the development of novel therapies remain undisclosed.

This collaboration comes at a critical juncture for AbbVie, as it seeks to offset the revenue impact resulting from the patent cliff and the competitive landscape in the biosimilar market. Recognizing the need for fresh sources of growth, AbbVie has been actively pursuing strategic partnerships and licensing deals. Recent initiatives include a strategic collaboration with OSE Immunotherapeutics to develop a potential "first-in-class" monoclonal antibody, OSE-230, addressing chronic and severe inflammation. Furthermore, AbbVie entered into a long-term partnership with TentarixBiotherapeutics to develop conditionally controlled activity, multispecific candidate biologics in the field of oncology and immunology.

AbbVie's investment of $2 billion in its collaboration with Medincell to develop long-acting injectable therapies underscores its commitment to innovation and expanding its treatment offerings. The utilization of Medincell's BEPO® platform holds the potential to revolutionize drug delivery, offering extended-release solutions that enhance patient convenience and therapeutic outcomes. With this strategic move, AbbVie aims to navigate the evolving pharmaceutical landscape, address unmet patient needs, and secure a competitive edge in the market.
