Atlantic Sapphire Faces Deepening Losses as Premature Maturation of Land-Based Salmon Impacts First Half-Year Production

ECHEMI 2024-04-24

Atlantic Sapphire, a prominent producer of land-based salmon, is experiencing escalating financial losses due to a significant issue of premature maturation affecting their operations in the United States. This problem is anticipated to have a substantial impact on the company's production output in the first half of the year.

Atlantic Sapphire, a leading land-based salmon producer, has reported a staggering pre-tax loss of $134 million in 2023, more than doubling the losses of $54.7 million incurred in 2022, according to the company's annual report.

The primary factor contributing to the financial losses, as stated by the company, is a premature maturation issue that occurred at their Homestead facility in Florida during the third quarter of 2023. These biological challenges have adversely affected overall productivity, resulting in a 31% decline in last year's production volume (measured in HOG equivalents) to 1,545 tons.

Although Atlantic Sapphire has not yet released its first-quarter report for 2024, the Chief Financial Officer, Oystein Oyehaug, has indicated some improvement in operational performance during the first quarter. The recent installation of auxiliary cooling systems has played a crucial role in stabilizing the farming temperature, leading to enhanced biological performance. However, the impact of last year's premature maturation issue is expected to persist into the second quarter, with an estimated production volume of 1,000 tons for that period, following the first-quarter output of 1,150 tons.

Oyehaug predicts that by the summer of this year, the biological levels at the Florida facility will reach an optimal state, resulting in a production volume of 2,150 tons in the first half of the year. The company's annual target production volume for this year is set at 9,000 tons, assuming the normal operation of all RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) systems. As time progresses, Atlantic Sapphire will continue to refine its operational procedures, strengthen employee training, and upgrade facilities to achieve the projected production capacity.

Atlantic Sapphire is grappling with mounting losses caused by premature maturation issues affecting their land-based salmon production. The company's financial performance in 2023 was significantly impacted, and the repercussions are expected to persist into the first half of 2024. However, with strategic improvements and a focus on overcoming these challenges, Atlantic Sapphire aims to achieve its annual production targets and enhance the performance of its land-based salmon operations.
