EU Evaluates Feed Additive Containing Xylanase and Glucanase for Weaned Piglets

On May 15, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced that the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) has provided a scientific opinion on the efficacy of the feed additive ROVABIO® ADVANCE for weaned piglets.

The feed additive contains endo-1,4-beta-xylanase and endo-1,3(4)-beta-glucanase produced using Talaromyces versatilis strains IMI 378536 and DSM 26702. According to the information provided, the FEEDAP Panel was unable to conclude on the efficacy of the additive for the target species.

In a previous assessment, the FEEDAP Panel had considered three long-term trials in weaned piglets, two of which were deemed to support the efficacy of the additive. However, a third trial was not further considered due to the large number of veterinary treatments applied.

For the current assessment, a new trial was submitted to support the efficacy of the additive. However, this trial did not show a significant improvement in performance parameters at the minimum recommended use level.

Due to the lack of sufficient data, the FEEDAP Panel stated that it is not in a position to conclude on the efficacy of the additive for weaned piglets. The Panel's scientific opinion will be considered by the European Commission in its decision-making process regarding the authorization of this feed additive.

This evaluation highlights the importance of providing robust and comprehensive data to demonstrate the efficacy of feed additives intended for use in animal production. The EFSA's rigorous assessment process ensures that only feed additives with proven benefits are authorized for use in the European Union.
