Canada Proposes Revisions to Maximum Residue Limits for Picarbutrazox and Dichlorprop in Select Food Items
Canada's Health Ministry has recently issued notices PMRL2024-06 and PMRL2024-07, announcing the Pest Management Regulatory Agency's (PMRA) plans to revise the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for two pesticides - Picarbutrazox and Dichlorprop - in various food commodities.
The proposed revisions are as follows:
| Pesticide | Food Item | Proposed MRL (ppm) |
| Picarbutrazox | Dried shelled peas and beans (except soybeans) (Crop Subgroup 6C); Cereal grains (Crop Group 15); Rapeseed (revised) (Crop Subgroup 20A) |
0.01 |
| Dichlorprop | Annual canary grass seed | 0.02 |
The public consultation period for these proposed MRL amendments is open from May 16, 2024 to July 30, 2024. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide their feedback during this time.
This update is part of Canada's ongoing efforts to ensure food safety and align its pesticide regulations with the latest scientific evidence. By revising MRLs, the government aims to protect consumer health while supporting sustainable agriculture practices.
Food manufacturers, importers, and producers should closely monitor these developments and prepare for the potential changes in maximum allowable residue levels for Picarbutrazox and Dichlorprop in the specified food items. Compliance with the updated regulations will be critical to maintaining access to the Canadian market.
