Polyplastics launches new glass-filled PPS grade with improved thermal shock resistance

ECHEMI 2024-05-21

Polyplastics, a leading global engineering plastics company, has announced the launch of a new generation of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) grades that offer significantly improved thermal shock resistance and can be easily recycled without sorting during post-consumer recycling (PCR).

Durafide PPS 1140HS6 is a 40% glass-filled grade that meets the requirements for metal insert molding, particularly  busbars for electric vehicle (xEV). Durafide PPS 1140HS6 can be easily collected and does not need to be separated from other PPS components during recycling. Polyplastics uses material design technology to reduce internal stresses by minimizing residual strains during molding and homogenizing linear expansion to ensure thermal shock resistance. As a result, thermal shock resistance is improved while mechanical and other essential properties are retained.

Durafide PPS 1140HS6 eliminates molding defects and enhances performance without the need for impact modifiers in xEV busbar applications. Insert molded xEV components conduct high-voltage currents in various electrical parts and their complex shapes make them susceptible to cracking.

They usually consist of conductive metal and PPS resin used as an insulating coating. This cracking problem is caused by repeated heating and cooling followed by rapid temperature changes. This is a serious problem that can lead to insulation failure, especially in critical components of the xEV that conduct high-voltage current.

The newly developed Durafide PPS 1140HS6 PPS resin flows better during the injection molding process than standard materials. This makes it ideal for forming thin-walled and large products.
