EU Approves Isomaltulose Powder as a Novel Food for the Market

On June 7, 2024, the European Commission promulgated Regulation (EU) 2024/1611, which follows Regulation (EC) No 2015/2283 of the European Parliament and of the Council and explicitly authorizes the placing on the market of isomaltose powder as a novel food. It also amends the annex to the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 of the European Commission.

Isomaltose, as a naturally occurring sugar substance in honey and sugarcane, has the advantage of being a potential substitute for other sugars in food because its sweetness is similar to sucrose, but its digestion speed is relatively slow. The approval of isomaltose powder as a new food in the EU market opens up a new way for its extensive use in various food applications.

The European Commission's decision demonstrates its commitment to meet consumers' urgent needs for healthy and sustainable food choices and to continue to broaden the range of safe and innovative ingredients available to food manufacturers. As the market continues to evolve and develop, it is reasonable to expect that more new food products will be approved in the future, thus providing consumers with more diversified and rich food choices.
