L’Occitane and Carbios launch PET bottle made with enzymatic recycling in Europe

ECHEMI 2024-06-11

L’Occitane and Carbios unveil the brand’s next generation developments aimed at eliminating virgin plastic from retail products. At LuxePack, the two companies presented a transparent PET bottle made entirely with enzymatic recycling for Amande shower oil, a French natural cosmetics brand.

The bottle is made by a European value chain committed to circularity, where local PET waste is broken down into virgin monomers and then repolymerized in Europe into new, fully recycled PET resins. These resins are then blow-molded in France according to L’Occitane’s specifications and then filled at its Manosque plant.

This European approach optimizes the environmental benefits of the technology and the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of each product by reducing transport distances and integrating local collection and production processes. To meet the needs of international brands, it is imperative to draw inspiration from this example and set up similar chains around the world.

David Bayard, L’Occitane R&D Packaging Director, revealed: “At L’Occitane Provence, we are agents of change and we are proud to be part of this forward-thinking industry. Today, more than 50% of our PET material comes from recycled content. Thanks to Carbios and depolymerization technologies, we will be able to achieve 100% recyclability for all our retail bottles by 2027.”
