South Korea Strengthens Regulations on Labeling and Importing Alcoholic Beverages

In recent days, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) officially released an important notice on June 20th. According to the current "Food Labeling Standards" in South Korea, except for specific categories of alcoholic beverages such as distilled spirits, medicinal wines, and beers, all other alcoholic products must clearly display the production date, lot number, or bottling date on the product. This measure aims to provide consumers with more detailed and accurate product information, ensuring that consumer rights and interests are not infringed upon.

Notably, from June 28th, 2024, the MFDS will further tighten the review standards for the declaration of imported alcoholic beverages. When making import declarations, businesses not only need to accurately fill in the production date of the product, but also need to clearly enter the product lot number in the field specifically used for entering Korean labeling information. The implementation of this measure will undoubtedly greatly improve the safety and transparency of imported alcoholic beverages.

For businesses that fail to report the relevant information according to the new regulations, the MFDS system will automatically reject the order. This means that if imported alcoholic beverages do not indicate the correct production date, lot number, or bottling date on the packaging, or if this information is not filled in during the declaration process, these products will not be able to enter the Korean market smoothly.

The implementation of this new regulation will effectively curb those alcoholic products that may have non-standard operations during the production process or have quality issues. Furthermore, the MFDS also stated that they will regularly conduct spot checks and inspections on alcoholic products in the market to ensure that these products meet the relevant standards and regulations. For products with quality issues, they will impose penalties according to the law and publicly expose the relevant companies and product information to maintain fair competition in the market and protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers.
