The Rise of Kenyan Avocado Exports to China
In August 2022, fresh Kenyan avocados embarked on their journey to China, marking the formal launch of Kenyan fresh avocado exports to China. This historic event not only brought new development opportunities for Kenya's avocado industry but also provided Chinese consumers with more diverse choices.
According to statistics from China's General Administration of Customs, China imported 443.6 tons of avocados from Kenya in 2022, and this figure skyrocketed to a remarkable 4,324.1 tons in 2023, an increase of nearly 10 times.
The Port of Mombasa, as the largest port in East Africa, bears the important import and export tasks of Kenya and the entire East African region. To reduce the transportation costs from various parts of Kenya to the Port of Mombasa and improve the price competitiveness of export products, the port authority (KPA) has been actively researching innovative methods. This not only helps to enhance the international competitiveness of Kenyan avocados but also helps attract more international buyers.
Sunripe and Vertical Farming Group are well-known avocado production companies in Kenya, and their Acacia farm has already obtained certification from China's General Administration of Customs and the European Union. This means that the avocados produced by the Acacia farm can be smoothly exported to China, Europe, Canada, and the Middle East. KPA is working closely with the Vertical Farming Group, using advanced refrigerated container technology to quickly and safely transport Acacia farm's avocados to the Port of Mombasa, ensuring that they receive priority treatment when being loaded onto ships.
The Kenyan avocado industry has a distinct seasonal characteristic. There are two production seasons every year, with the main season lasting from March to September, when production is relatively high and quality is more stable. The other small season is from November to January of the following year. Due to the relatively low production and the quality being easily affected by weather factors during the small season, avocados can only be exported to foreign markets by air. During the main season, sea freight becomes a more economical and efficient choice, significantly reducing logistics costs.
In the Chinese market, consumers have certain preferences for avocado sizes. Among the products imported from Kenya, approximately 30% are large-sized avocados, and 60% are small-sized avocados. This mixed-size product structure not only meets the needs of different consumers but also enhances the market competitiveness of the products. The Hass avocado yield of the Acacia farm is between 8-14 tons per acre, and the Fuerte variety can even reach 14-20 tons per acre. This allows Sunripe and Vertical Farming Group to export about 3,500 tons during the main season, using refrigerated container ships to export to overseas markets.
Although the European market has always been the largest export destination for Kenyan avocados, accounting for about 65% of exports, the rise of the Chinese market has brought new opportunities for Kenya's avocado industry. As Chinese consumers' demand for healthy and nutritious foods continues to grow, Kenyan avocados, with their unique flavor and nutritional value, have gradually gained recognition in the Chinese market. In the future, with the further deepening of trade cooperation between China and Kenya and the continuous growth of consumer demand, Kenya's avocado industry is expected to have a broader development space.
