AbbVie Announces New CEO Robert A. Michael to Succeed Richard A. Gonzalez
On July 1, 2024, the global pharmaceutical company AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) officially announced that Mr. Robert A. Michael will take on the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective immediately and will also join the company's Board of Directors. Previously, according to the company's announcement, Mr. Richard A. Gonzalez, who has served as CEO since the company's founding in 2013, will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the AbbVie Board, continuing to contribute his wisdom and strength to the company.
Mr. Michael has deep industry experience, having previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer of AbbVie, and as a long-standing core member of the company's executive leadership team. During his tenure as President and COO, he was responsible for the company's global commercial operations, financial management, corporate human resources, global operations strategy, business development, and strategic planning. In 2018, he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer, and in the following years, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of Finance and Business Operations in 2021 and Vice Chairman and President in 2022. Over his 31-year career, Mr. Michael has demonstrated exceptional leadership across multiple business areas, including pharmaceuticals, aesthetics, diagnostics, diabetes care, and nutrition, starting his career as a finance development program member at Abbott.
