The Icy and Fiery Landscape of the CAR-T Race
Amid the rapid advances in the frontier of medicine, CAR-T therapy, we are witnessing a dynamic that is both exciting and complex. Recent news reports have revealed some key trends in this field. Among them, the famous legendary creatures seem to be the focus, because it was revealed that the company has received a number of offer, and has commissioned Centerview Partners the investment company to help its board scrutiny these proposals. The news underscores the intense interest of multinationals (MNCS) in the field of CAR-T technology, starting with Gilead Sciences' acquisition of Kite Pharma for $11.9 billion in 2017. In 2018 and its $9 billion acquisition Juno Therapeutics has been increasing since these two big deals.
There is, however, is a high-profile event Genesis technology company decided to pull out and reindeer biological science and technology cooperation about BCMA CAR - T therapy. The decision triggered a further thinking on the commercial feasibility of CAR - T therapy, especially considering the Genesis of Fcori keogh shimron (Iraq) injection in just a year ago, won the state drug administration (NMPA) approval, used in the treatment of relapse/refractory multiple myeloma. Genesis's silence on Fcori injection sales performance, followed by its withdrawal from the BCMA CAR-T collaboration with Reindeer Bio, perhaps indicates the insurgence of scaling up the commercial success of these revolutionary therapies.
If we take a global view of the CAR-T market, we will find that the whole market presents a complex and changeable picture. Although global sales of CAR-T therapies reached $3.7 billion in 2023, an increase of 37% compared to 2022, this growth rate slowed down from 57.8% in 2022. The reason for the slow growth is that there are still many challenges in extending CAR-T therapy to other cancer types other than hematological malignancies, and the current CAR-T therapy in the treatment of hematological cancers is highly focused on the CD19 antigen.
In this market, there is a clear performance divergence between the various CAR-T products. For example, Yescarta, developed by Gilead Sciences and Kite Pharma, has become a market star and is the only CAR-T therapy to surpass $1 billion in sales in the U.S. Yescarta success can be attributed to its market first-mover advantage, compared to the competitors remarkable curative effect, and Gilead on commercial execution performance.
At the same time, the market performance of other CAR - T therapy is relatively flat, which further highlights the polarisation of the internal market. This phenomenon, points out that the CAR - T therapy manufacturer needs not only the development of innovative treatment, must also deal with including regulatory approval, medical insurance reimbursement policies and effective commercial strategy, a series of complex challenges.
As the CAR-T field continues to evolve, the industry is filled with both enthusiastic promises of transformative therapeutics and serious challenges to scaling up commercial success. Find a balance between these two forces, to give full play to the revolutionary of the full potential of the tumor treatment is very important.
