The alkali metals can react with water to generate hydrogen and form oxides in the air, so they are relatively reactive. Alkaline earth metals are also important metallic elements with good electrical and thermal conductivity. Compared to the alkali metals in the same cycle, the atomic radius is smaller because they have more nuclear charge. Besides, their ionization energy and electrode potential are larger, and their reactivity is poorer. However, they also can form ionic bond compounds because they still belong to active metals. They are soft enough to be cut with a cutter except for Be and Mg.

 

The electron configuration of alkaline earth metals presents in the form of ns2 with two s-electrons in the outer layer. Their density is higher than alkaline metals, increasing from Mg to Ra. Their activity is less, but they still can form compounds when reacting with oxygen or water.

 

The application of alkaline earth metals

Alkaline earth metals also have been widely used in many fields. Calcium element, one of the main components of human bones and teeth, is essential to maintain bone health. Barium compounds often take part in advertising, lighting, and the medical industry. Moreover, in the process of producing alloys, anticorrosive agents, and demagnetizing materials, magnesium and calcium can be applied.

 

Both of alkali and alkaline earth metals, there are some potential dangers. For alkaline earth metals, magnesium powder is very easy to burn in the air, releasing high temperatures to cause fires and empyrosis. Barium compounds are toxic and may cause damage to human health with excessive intake.
