UN's Q4 2023 Food Safety Report Highlights Industry Focus Areas

ECHEMI 2024-08-06

On July 31, 2024, the United Nations International Food Safety Network (INFOSAN) published one of its major annual reports, the Quarterly Report on Food Safety (October-December 2023). The report provides a detailed overview of 51 global food safety incidents in the fourth quarter of 2023, covering a wide range of food types and hazard types in the member states and regions of the United Nations World Health Organization, revealing the serious challenges facing current global food safety.

According to the report, foods such as mixed milk and dairy products, snack desserts, fruits and fruit products accounted for a significant proportion of these incidents. These foods are loved for their broad consumer base and taste, however, due to the complexity of production, processing, storage and transportation, they are also more likely to become a breeding ground for safety hazards, resulting in frequent food safety incidents.

In terms of hazard types, biohazards were listed as the most prominent problem, with contamination incidents involving pathogenic microorganisms such as Listeria monocytogenes and salmonella being the most common. Infection with these microorganisms can lead to serious public health problems, including acute gastroenteritis, sepsis and even death. In addition, chemical pollution (such as pesticide residues, heavy metal pollution) and physical foreign substances (such as packaging material debris, foreign substances in the production process) are also food safety issues that cannot be ignored. At the same time, the report also highlights the problem of inadequate allergen declarations, which can pose serious health risks for people with allergies.

The release of this report provides an important reference for national food safety regulators and food companies to identify potential risks, improve management measures, and prevent the occurrence of food safety incidents. China attaches great importance to this, and will continue to promote the implementation of the newly revised Food Safety Law, strengthen the supervision of the whole process from farmland to the table, and improve the safety prevention and control capacity of the food industry, so as to ensure the food safety of the masses of people and protect the "safety of the tip of the tongue".

The complexity and diversity of global food safety issues remind us that ensuring food safety requires not only the efforts of national governments, but also the joint participation and collaboration of food producers, consumers, scientific research institutions and other parties to build a safer and more transparent global food safety system.
